The government has disbursed over USD 24.3 million in loans to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the Maldives through the SME Digital financing platform. The funding has reached 575 businesses operating across 189 islands in all atolls, marking a significant push toward nationwide economic decentralization.
Established in 2019, SME Digital has become one of the country's largest financing providers for smaller ventures. Between November 17, 2023, and April 15, 2026, the institution focused on transforming entrepreneurial ideas into viable, income-generating businesses, specifically benefiting freelancers, young entrepreneurs, and home-based workers.
The distribution of funds reflects a diversified approach to economic growth. The trade sector received the highest allocation at USD 7.52 million, followed by fisheries at USD 6.61 million and tourism at USD 5.25 million. Manufacturing received USD 2.21 million, while transport was allocated USD 1.36 million. Smaller amounts were distributed to agriculture, construction, and information technology, each receiving approximately USD 388,000.
Beyond general lending, SME Digital has implemented targeted financing schemes to foster the economic empowerment of women entrepreneurs, aiming to increase their financial independence and leadership within the business community.
To support the Maldives' primary industries, the company has streamlined financing for critical assets in the tourism and fishing sectors. This includes specialized loans for the procurement of cargo boats and fishing vessels, ensuring that local operators have the necessary tools to scale their operations. By providing tailored financial support, SME Digital continues to bridge the gap between innovative concepts and sustainable commercial success for the Maldivian workforce.
