South Asian Games Postponed Again: Rescheduled to 2027
Sports ·
The 14th South Asian Games (SAG) has been postponed once more, with the South Asian Olympic Council (SAOC), in coordination with the Government of Pakistan, confirming that the regional multi-sport event will now take place in 2027. This marks the most prolonged and unprecedented series of delays in the history of the Games, which were last held in Kathmandu in 2019. According to SAOC, the Games are tentatively scheduled for 23 January to 6 February 2027, provided preparations proceed as planned. The six-year delay has had a significant impact on athletes across the region, many of whom have aged out of their competitive categories or retired, losing crucial opportunities to qualify for or prepare for larger international events. The event was originally planned for March 2023, before being successively pushed back to March 2024, then January 2026, and now 2027. The Games will be hosted primarily in Lahore, with Faisalabad, Islamabad, and Karachi serving as supporting venues for a total of 27 sports. A combination of challenges has contributed to the repeated postponements, including the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing India–Pakistan diplomatic tensions, both of which hindered planning and coordination efforts. Pakistan has hosted the South Asian Games twice before, in 1989 and 2004, both in Islamabad. Among the South Asian nations, Bhutan and the Maldives have yet to host the Games due to limited sporting infrastructure. The latest postponement marks another setback for regional athletes and federations, who now face an extended wait before the continent’s premier multi-sport event returns to the calendar.
