Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla Returns Following Inter-Parliamentary Peace Conference in Cambodia

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has returned to the Maldives after leading a high-level delegation to the 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The three-day event, held from August 26 to 28, served as a global forum for parliamentary leaders to discuss sustainable development and the resolution of international conflicts. During the conference, Speaker Abdulla delivered a keynote address centered on the theme “Solidarity for Peace and Shared Prosperity: Strengthening International Law and Resolving Conflicts Peacefully.” He emphasized that the stability of the global order relies heavily on the adherence to international law and the prioritization of diplomatic dialogue over confrontation. Addressing the critical role of legislative bodies, the Speaker highlighted that parliamentary diplomacy is a vital tool for strengthening bilateral relations. By fostering direct communication between lawmakers, countries can create sustainable opportunities for peace and cooperation, reducing the likelihood of violence and escalation in disputed regions. Speaker Abdulla called upon his international peers to renew their commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and to strengthen the bonds between global legislatures to ensure shared prosperity. He argued that the collaborative efforts of parliaments are essential for maintaining global peace in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape. The Speaker was accompanied by a delegation comprising Parliamentarians Mohamed Shahid from Hithadhoo, Mustafa Hussain from Machangolhi South, and Ashraf Rasheed from Faresmaathodaa. Also part of the delegation were Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, Chief of Bureau at the Parliament Secretariat, and Zuyyina Badhree, Assistant Director General of the Foreign Relations Department. The Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference continues to be a primary venue for the leaders of the world's legislatures to align their strategies on international law and the pursuit of global peace.
