Speaker Abdul Raheem Urges Stronger Parliamentary Diplomacy to Ensure Global Peace

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has called for a renewed commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and international law to foster global peace and shared prosperity. Addressing the General Debate of the 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Speaker Abdul Raheem emphasized that parliaments hold a critical responsibility in resolving conflicts peacefully and enhancing cooperation between nations. Speaking under the theme “Solidarity for Peace and Shared Prosperity,” the Speaker highlighted Cambodia’s successful transition from conflict to peace as a testament to how leadership and reconciliation can bridge deep national divisions. He underscored that the UN Charter and international law serve as essential safeguards for the sovereignty and security of small island states like the Maldives. Speaker Abdul Raheem argued that dialogue must always take precedence over confrontation. He specifically noted the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean, describing it as a shared lifeline for millions who depend on trade, fisheries, and tourism. He reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to collaborating with international partners to enhance maritime security while protecting the marine environment for future generations. The Speaker also linked environmental security directly to global peace, noting that climate change—manifested through rising sea levels and coral reef degradation—threatens the resilience and stability of the Maldives. He asserted that protecting the marine environment is not merely an ecological duty, but a strategic investment in peace and sustainable development. Regarding shared prosperity, Speaker Abdul Raheem urged a broader definition of success beyond economic growth, advocating for a focus on quality education, innovation, and the empowerment of young people. Addressing current global crises, the Speaker expressed deep concern over the humanitarian suffering in the Middle East. He called for an immediate ceasefire and a just, lasting peace based on international law and the legitimate aspirations of all affected peoples. Concluding his address, Speaker Abdul Raheem urged parliamentary leaders to choose law over force and cooperation over conflict, calling for a future defined by stability and collective prosperity.
