Speaker Assures Parliament Supermajority Will Serve Public Welfare

Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has assured the Maldivian public that the ruling party's historic supermajority in the 20th Parliament will not lead to dominance but will remain dedicated to serving national welfare. In an exclusive interview with PSM News following the conclusion of parliamentary sessions, the Speaker emphasized the legislature's commitment to responsible governance and rigorous accountability. He stated that Parliament operates strictly within constitutional and legal frameworks while effectively holding the government accountable. The Speaker highlighted the Parliament's substantial legislative output, noting that 82 bills were introduced during the last session with 60 successfully completed. He promised that legislative work would continue without delays in the upcoming term. Addressing public concerns about potential misuse of the People's National Congress supermajority, Speaker Abdul Raheem affirmed that all members receive equal opportunities regardless of party affiliation. He stressed that laws are amended only in ways most beneficial to the public. The Speaker refuted allegations of inadequate review of executive proposals, explaining that bills undergo proper scrutiny before passage. Amendments are regularly incorporated when deemed necessary and constitutionally consistent, ensuring thorough legislative oversight.
