State Pharma Partners With Villa College to Address Pharmacist Shortage

State Pharmaceutical and Medical Supply Corporation (State Pharma) and Villa College have entered discussions to establish a strategic framework for training and developing pharmacists in the Maldives. The collaboration aims to address a critical gap in the healthcare sector by increasing the number of young Maldivians entering the pharmaceutical field. During the meetings, the two institutions focused on creating a sustainable pipeline of talent. Key discussions centered on expanding enrollment in pharmaceutical studies and developing clear employment pathways for students and graduates to ensure a smooth transition from the classroom to the workforce. Beyond undergraduate training, State Pharma and Villa College explored the development of specialized refresher courses. These programs would be designed for current professionals, ensuring that practicing pharmacists remain updated on the latest medical advancements and regulatory standards. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by State Pharma to stabilize the national healthcare workforce. The company recently held similar consultations with the Maldives National University’s Faculty of Health Sciences to scale up professional training across the sector. The urgency of these partnerships is highlighted by State Pharma's recent recruitment drive, which saw more than 30 pharmacist vacancies advertised last month to meet growing demand across the atolls. In tandem with workforce development, State Pharma is modernizing its service delivery. The company is currently developing a dedicated online portal to improve public access to essential medications. Once launched, the platform will allow citizens to search for available medicines and identify specific pharmacies with current stock, reducing the burden on patients seeking critical treatments.
