StatePharma Launches Real-Time Stock Tracking to Solve National Medicine Shortages

The State Pharmaceuticals and Medical Supplies Corporation (StatePharma) has launched a digital monitoring system to track medicine inventories across all nationwide pharmacies in real time. Managing Director Dr. Shah Mahir stated that the initiative is a critical step toward establishing a sustainable and uninterrupted supply of essential medication throughout the Maldives. Last year, StatePharma identified a significant gap in its operational capacity: a lack of accurate, live data on stock levels within pharmacies in Malé and the outer islands. This information deficit served as a primary obstacle in addressing the country's chronic medicine supply challenges. As the corporation nears its first anniversary, the new digital system allows for immediate visibility into available stocks, enabling more precise distribution. Dr. Shah announced that the corporation intends to make this stock information accessible to the general public within the next two months, increasing transparency for patients seeking specific treatments. To further stabilize the supply chain, StatePharma is currently assessing national requirements to place annual medicine orders well in advance, reducing the risk of sudden shortages. On the procurement front, StatePharma has already secured agreements with three import companies and is negotiating with additional partners to diversify its sources. These efforts are being paired with the development of new storage facilities and the establishment of pharmacies within hospitals across the archipelago. The corporation expects a visible improvement in the national medicine supply situation by mid-next year. To enhance patient experience, StatePharma has implemented a referral system; if a prescribed medicine is unavailable at one location, patients will be directed to the nearest pharmacy that has it in stock. For items completely unavailable nationwide, pharmacies will initiate expedited ordering processes. Additionally, the corporation has launched a 24-hour hotline (1505) to handle medicine-related inquiries from citizens across the Maldives.
