The Privatisation and Corporatisation Board (PCB) has appointed Dr Ali Azwar as the Managing Director of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), marking a significant leadership transition for the state-owned utility provider. Dr Azwar brings an extensive history with the company, having joined STELCO in 1997 as a trainee. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he ascended through various technical and administrative roles, most recently serving as the company's Deputy Managing Director. His tenure has been defined by a focus on strengthening management structures and formulating energy policies tailored to the specific needs of the Maldives. Beyond his executive leadership, Dr Azwar has served as an Executive Director on the STELCO board and as a Non-Executive Director at Fuel Supply Maldives (FSM). During his time as Chief Operating Officer, he was instrumental in aligning the company's operations with national energy goals and improving overall business development and financial oversight. His professional experience is backed by rigorous academic credentials. Dr Azwar holds a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington, where his research focused specifically on renewable energy in small island states. He also holds a Master in Public Policy from the National University of Singapore and a Bachelor’s (Honours) degree from the University of Sheffield. With a specialization in renewable energy and policy development for island nations, Dr Azwar is well-positioned to navigate the challenges of the Maldives' evolving energy landscape. His expertise is further complemented by international participation in seminars regarding disaster risk reduction, communication, and corporate governance. As STELCO continues to manage the power needs of the capital and surrounding areas, Dr Azwar's appointment signals a commitment to blending deep institutional knowledge with global academic insights to drive the company's strategic growth.
