STELCO Employee Dies After Being Critically Injured in Workplace Fire

A staff member of the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) who was critically injured in a fire while working to resolve a power outage in Hulhumale’ Phase II has passed away. The employee, identified as Ahmed Azmeel, 43, was a supervisor with over 21 years of service at the company. The incident occurred on November 26 when a medium-voltage panel fault at the Hulhumalé old powerhouse caused power outages in some areas of Hulhumale’ Phase I. Azmeel was injured while repairing a switchgear and was initially treated at Hulhumale’ Hospital before being transferred to a hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. His death marks a tragic loss for the company and the community. This year has seen multiple power outages in Malé and Hulhumalé, including a significant blackout in August that left residents without electricity for nearly three hours.
