STELCO Managing Director Invites Next Generation of Engineers to Lead National Development

The State Electric Company (STELCO) is actively seeking talented young professionals to enter the engineering field, emphasizing that the utility's doors remain open to those eager to drive the nation's technical progress. Speaking in a message to mark National Engineers’ Day, STELCO Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar described the engineering profession as the backbone of national development. He extended his congratulations to engineers working both within the Maldives and abroad, while specifically acknowledging President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu as an engineer who brings pride to the nation. Dr. Azwar highlighted that STELCO's technical team is now 100 per cent Maldivian, a milestone that ensures the continuous, 24-hour delivery of essential public utilities. He paid tribute to the early employees who built the company's foundation despite limited resources and significant educational barriers, stating that the "sweat and blood" of both retired and active personnel paved the way for current successes. To sustain this growth, STELCO has prioritized advanced technical training through partnerships with European firms. The company's commitment to professional development is reflected in its training quotas, securing 535 opportunities in 2024 and increasing that number to 947 for 2025. Dr. Azwar noted that the utility continues to offer higher education pathways and remains a primary hub for developing home-grown engineering talent. Despite noting that student enrollment in engineering remains relatively low, the Managing Director maintained that the field is essential for national progress and remains highly productive. He reaffirmed the company's commitment to cultivating a new generation fluent in advanced technologies, asserting that the stability of the Maldives' power grid is a direct result of the tireless efforts of its engineering workforce.
