STO Expands Gas Storage by 1,500 Tonnes to Stabilize Supply Amid Global Crisis
Politics ·
The State Trading Organisation (STO) is advancing a project to add 1,500 tonnes of gas storage capacity in the Malé area, as announced by Finance and Planning Minister Moosa Zameer. This expansion aims to ensure a stable fuel and gas supply for the Maldives, countering volatility from global price surges driven by the Middle East conflict.
Global fuel and gas prices have risen sharply, increasing costs for imported petrol and diesel, which has led to significant local price hikes. The government is intensifying efforts to secure consistent availability, recognizing the impact on households and businesses across the nation.
Recently, STO's subsidiary, Maldives Gas, operated with limited stocks, selling gas in restricted quantities due to heightened demand. However, normal services have resumed following the arrival of a new shipment, providing relief to consumers.
Minister Zameer assured that there are no constraints on gas shipments, noting that the Maldives sources from the same regional suppliers as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He explained that gas is transported via smaller vessels, often using Maldivian waters for operations due to favorable weather conditions, which helps maintain supply chains.
The storage project is a key component of the government's strategy to enhance energy security. If progress continues as planned, it is expected to be completed within the year, bolstering infrastructure resilience against future market fluctuations.
During the recent supply crunch, Maldives Gas offered discounted 5kg cylinders as a temporary alternative to standard 10kg ones. With the latest shipment, operations have returned to regular levels, underscoring the importance of expanded storage to prevent such disruptions.
Gas is essential for cooking and other domestic uses in the Maldives, making reliable supply critical for daily life. This expansion will help buffer against price volatility and support economic stability, aligning with broader initiatives to diversify energy sources and improve national infrastructure.
