STO Launches Portable Ultrasound Scanners to Expand Healthcare Access Across Maldives

State Trading Organisation (STO) has introduced the "Vscan" range of portable ultrasound scanners to the Maldivian market, aiming to decentralize diagnostic services and bring critical care closer to patients in remote areas. The new technology, developed by GE HealthCare, was officially unveiled at a ceremony held at Hotel Jen. The launch was led by STO CEO and Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim and GE HealthCare’s South Asia Head of Sales, Jagdish Babu. According to STO, these portable devices are designed to operate outside conventional clinic settings, allowing medical professionals to conduct screenings at the patient's bedside. This mobility presents a significant opportunity to extend specialized diagnostic services to smaller islands, where access to full-scale imaging facilities is often limited. Technologically, the Vscan models integrate seamlessly with modern digital infrastructure. The scanners can be connected to Android and Apple smartphones as well as laptops, enabling clinicians to share high-resolution images using the global DICOM standard for medical imaging. As the authorized distributor for GE HealthCare—a brand already deeply integrated into Maldivian hospitals—STO is focusing on the long-term sustainability of the equipment. To ensure consistent uptime and reliability, STO’s biomedical department has trained and deployed dedicated engineers for various medical modalities, including MRI, CT, mammography, and ultrasound. Notably, STO highlighted the inclusion of Maldivian female engineers within these certified technical teams, reflecting a push for local expertise in high-tech medical maintenance. The introduction of the Vscan range is part of a broader strategy by STO to modernize the Maldives' healthcare sector by importing innovative technologies that reduce the need for patient travel to the capital for basic diagnostic imaging.
