STO Records USD 18.2 Million Net Profit with 71 Percent Annual Growth

The State Trading Organisation (STO) reported a net profit of USD 18.2 million for the second quarter of this year, marking a significant 71 percent increase compared to the same period last year. According to the company's latest financial report, STO generated USD 452.7 million in revenue during the second quarter. This represents a 27 percent surge from the first quarter, where revenue stood at USD 355.4 million. The company's profit before tax reached USD 21.7 million, a slight 1.4 percent increase over the USD 21.4 million recorded at the start of the year. STO attributed the substantial rise in revenue primarily to the escalation of global oil prices, driven by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. While these global trends bolstered the company's top-line figures, they created a complex balance for the state-owned enterprise. To protect Maldivian consumers from global volatility, STO worked in coordination with the Government to keep domestic fuel prices relatively stable. This strategic decision to cap prices for the public led to a decline in fuel margins, ultimately reducing the total profit derived from the company's fuel business. Despite the diminished returns from fuel sales, STO reported that its overall profitability remained strong. The company noted that growth in other business activities effectively offset the losses in the fuel sector, allowing for the recorded net profit of USD 18.2 million. This financial performance highlights STO's dual role as a commercial entity and a state instrument for economic stability, balancing profit generation with the necessity of maintaining affordable essential services for the population.
