Sudan Accuses RSF of Genocide, Demands Global Accountability
International ·
Sudan has accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of committing acts of genocide and called for international accountability beyond mere statements of concern. Minister Plenipotentiary Faisal Abdelazim Salim Mohamed, addressing a high-level UN General Assembly meeting, stated that civilians in regions like Al Fasher have faced mass killings, sexual violence, forced displacement, and the deliberate destruction of evidence. Mohamed emphasized that these acts meet the legal definition of genocide and are well-documented, demanding concrete global action. Sudan urged the international community to impose measures such as halting arms flow to the RSF, targeted sanctions on perpetrators, and increased cooperation to prevent weapons from reaching non-state armed groups. The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and millions displaced. Mohamed also stressed that genocide is a test of the international system itself, calling for decisive steps to protect civilians and hold perpetrators accountable.
