Suha Ibrahim Wins Meedhoo Council Presidency Following Tight Run-off Election
Politics ·
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated Suha Ibrahim after she secured victory in the extra round of polling for the President of the Meedhoo Council. The win concludes a contested race triggered by a tie in the initial 2026 Local Councils Election.
In a statement shared via social media, President Muizzu extended his well-wishes to Ibrahim and expressed gratitude toward the constituency's voters and the campaign teams who worked to ensure the victory.
According to provisional results released by the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM), Ibrahim, representing the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), garnered 529 votes. Her opponent, Mohamed Shahid of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), received 449 votes.
The run-off saw a significant turnout, with 985 of the 1,049 eligible voters casting their ballots. This high participation rate underscores the local importance of the council leadership in the island community.
To facilitate the voting process, the ECM established three polling stations. Two ballot boxes were positioned at the Atoll School in Meedhoo to serve the 587 registered local voters, while a third was placed at Dharumavantha School in Malé for the 462 voters registered in the capital.
Polls remained open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, providing a structured window for the diaspora and local residents to decide the leadership of the Meedhoo Council. The result solidifies the PNC's influence in the region as Ibrahim prepares to take office.
