The Maldivian government is accelerating the restoration of several historic monuments linked to the national hero, Sultan Al-Ghaazee Mohamed Thakurufaanu, with the first phase scheduled for completion by this year's National Day celebrations.
Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Heena Waleed, announced the timeline during a press conference at the President’s Office. The comprehensive project, executed by the Road Development Corporation Limited (RDC), focuses on the northern islands of Utheemu, Thakandhoo, and Baarah to preserve the nation's architectural and cultural heritage.
In Utheemu, the birthplace of Sultan Thakurufaanu, the initiative includes the renovation of the iconic Utheemu Palace and the development of the ancient Kandhuvalu Mosque and its surrounding monuments. The island will also see the creation of a 'story forest park,' a new park for the elderly, and a commemorative gate honoring Bodu Thakurufaanu at the harbor area.
Development efforts in Thakandhoo center on the repair of the historic coral stone mosque and its adjacent cemetery. Minister Heena further revealed that concepts for a new memorial center on the island are currently being finalized, with practical preparations already underway.
Work is also slated for the island of Baarah, where the government is preparing to begin project implementation. To ensure the highest standards of preservation, the Ministry is seeking expertise and assistance from various international partners.
These projects represent a strategic effort to safeguard Maldivian history for future generations, transforming these sites into educational hubs that honor the legacy of one of the country's most revered figures.
