Supreme Court Judge Ali Rashid to Retire Next Month, JSC Begins Process to Fill Seat

Local News ·
Supreme Court Judge Ali Rashid Hussain will retire on the 1st of next month, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has confirmed. The JSC said it decided last month on the 28th to accept his retirement after Judge Ali Rashid submitted his request. In a statement today, the commission said it has decided to grant him honorable retirement starting from the 1st of next month, as requested. The JSC also said work has begun to complete the procedures outlined in Article 17 of the Judges Law to find a person for the position of Supreme Court Judge. Judge Ali Rashid is the Qazi who presided over the bench of five judges that sentenced former President Abdulla Yameen to prison in 2019 at the Criminal Court. He was appointed as a Supreme Court Judge approximately six years ago, on 8 September 2020. This followed his sentencing of Yameen: he ran for a vacant position in the Supreme Court while serving as a Qazi in the Criminal Court, and at that time only Ali Rashid ran for the position.
