Supreme Court Justice Ali Rashid Submits Resignation to JSC, Proposes Year-End Retirement

Local News ·
Justice Ali Rashid of the Supreme Court of the Maldives has submitted his resignation to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC). According to reports, he proposed retirement from his office at the end of this year, submitting the request last week. The JSC has not yet made a decision regarding the matter, and no clear reason has been stated for his retirement from the judiciary. Ali Rashid is a judge with a long career in the Maldivian judiciary, having served as a judge in the Criminal Court, Chief Judge of the Civil Court, and a judge in the Drug Court. He was notably the presiding judge on the five-judge bench that sentenced former President Abdulla Yameen to imprisonment in the Criminal Court in 2019. He was appointed to the Supreme Court six years ago. While serving as a Justice, disciplinary cases were submitted to the JSC against him, though none were proven. His retirement follows that of former Chief Justice Muhtasim Adnan, who retired last year.
