Technological Advancements Amplify Moral Duties of Media, Says PSM Managing Director
Politics ·
The rapid evolution of technology has significantly increased the ethical and professional responsibilities of the press, according to Ahmed Shakeeb, the Managing Director of Public Service Media (PSM). Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 21st Asia Media Summit, Shakeeb emphasized that as journalistic capabilities expand, so does the burden of responsibility to the public.
Addressing the summit under the theme 'Maldives 2.0: From Tradition to Tech,' Shakeeb noted that while Maldivians have historically maintained connections across the archipelago, modern technology has now permeated every atoll. He asserted that the media's role must transcend simple information delivery to include cultivating public trust, preserving cultural heritage, and strengthening democratic institutions.
As the state broadcaster, PSM remains committed to utilizing modern tools to ensure every citizen has a voice, Shakeeb affirmed, insisting that technology must ultimately serve human progress rather than dictate it.
The summit, co-organized by PSM and the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), has brought together over 300 international delegates at the Villa Nautica Maldives Resort. Philomena Gnanapragasam, CEO of the AIBD, encouraged media organizations to embrace new tools to propel the industry forward.
Sudruetai Lertkasem, President of the AIBD General Conference and Director-General of Thailand's Public Relations Department, highlighted the duality of emerging technology. While acknowledging the speed and efficiency offered by artificial intelligence, Lertkasem warned that AI also poses a profound threat as a tool for spreading disinformation.
Lertkasem further argued that the future of the industry will not be defined by software sophistication, but by the depth of trust audiences place in the media and the strength of international collaborations. She specifically called on journalists to act as critical conduits for humanitarian aid in conflict zones, documenting human suffering as a core moral obligation.
The AIBD continues to advocate for a robust electronic media ecosystem across the Asia-Pacific region. The summit, which seeks to formulate strategic decisions for the responsible evolution of the industry, will conclude on May 14.
