Thilafushi Incinerator to be Operational by Mid-2028, Minister Says

Environment ·
The incinerator being constructed in Thilafushi is expected to be completed and operational by mid-2028, according to the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Ali Sharif. Speaking at the 'Aha' forum organized by the President's Office and PSM, the minister stated that 40% of the work has been completed. The project had been stalled due to contractor issues but is now resuming with a new contractor. The waste-to-energy plant will have a capacity of 13 megawatts and will incinerate 500 tons of waste per day. Once operational, it is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40,000 metric tons within two years and save approximately 2 million litres of fuel annually by feeding 10 megawatts into the grid. Thilafushi is the largest hub for fibre-related waste in the Maldives, with waste being brought from other islands as well.
