Thilamale Bridge Reaches New Milestone: Vilimalé and Gulhiyfalhu Connected

Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib announced on Thursday that another important milestone of the Thilamale Bridge project has been completed. In a post on X, he stated that the final segment of the connection between Vilimalé and Gulhiyfalhu was joined today. The minister welcomed the Indian company Afcons, the consultant company Arup, and the ministry team working on the bridge construction. He expressed gratitude to the Government of India for the support provided and thanked everyone involved in the project. The Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCP), also known as the “Thilamale Bridge” project, is the largest infrastructure development project ever undertaken in the country's history. Funded by an Indian grant and line of credit worth $500 million, it aims to connect Malé, Vilimalé, Gulhiyfalhu, and Thilaafushi via a 6.74-kilometer bridge and causeway. Previously, the superstructure work for the Malé-Vilimalé section was completed last August. At that time, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that he hoped the construction of the Thilamale Bridge would be completed within about a year.
