Thinadhoo City Jetty Upgrade Nears Completion to Ease Regional Travel Hurdles

Politics ·
Thinadhoo City, the most populous island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, is moving closer to resolving long-standing travel challenges as the redevelopment of its primary jetty enters its final stages. As a critical hub for the atoll, the city sees a high volume of daily traffic from residents of surrounding islands who travel to Thinadhoo to access essential healthcare, education, and banking services. Despite the island's role as a regional center and its proximity to local airports, the lack of a fully functional boarding facility has remained a persistent concern for travelers. While previous administrations have attempted various upgrades, the current redevelopment phase has faced prolongations, leaving visitors and residents to navigate inconvenient boarding conditions. The Thinadhoo Jetty Development Project is being executed across five distinct phases. The current scope of work focuses on the comprehensive renovation of the arrival area and the replacement of the pier's roofed section. Crews are currently dismantling old wooden structures, ceiling components, and roof sheets to make way for a modern, durable roof. Beyond the visible structural changes, the project includes critical infrastructure upgrades. This involves the installation of new electrical wiring and the complete re-laying of water and sewage pipelines to ensure the facility meets modern standards. Once the structural work is complete, the final phase will involve applying weather-resistant coatings to protect the jetty from the harsh marine environment. Authorities anticipate that the upgraded facility will significantly enhance accessibility and safety for all commuters. Once completed, the jetty is expected to eliminate the current bottlenecks in passenger movement, providing a seamless transition for the thousands of people who rely on Thinadhoo as their gateway to essential services in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
