Thinadhoo's 102-Bed Tertiary Hospital Upgrade Begins with $9.37M Project

Health ·
Construction is now underway to transform the Dr Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, into a full tertiary care facility. The project, valued at USD 9.37 million, is being executed by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The development involves building a new 102-bed hospital structure on an 87,455 square metre site. The project timeline is set for 540 days, promising a significant upgrade to healthcare infrastructure for the southern atolls. Thinadhoo, with a population exceeding 10,000, functions as a critical regional hub. Many residents from surrounding islands travel there daily for medical services. The hospital's expansion to tertiary level is expected to drastically improve local access to specialized healthcare, allowing more residents to receive advanced treatments without leaving their region. This upgrade is anticipated to bring substantial relief to communities across Gaafu Dhaalu and neighboring atolls by eliminating the frequent need for costly and time-consuming travel to Malé or other distant islands for complex medical care. Concurrently with the main construction launch, separate works have officially begun to establish MRI services and install a hyperbaric oxygen chamber at the hospital. These additions will further expand the range of diagnostic and therapeutic services available locally, marking a major step forward for healthcare equity in the southern Maldives.
