Police have arrested three Bangladeshi citizens on suspicion of trading foreign currency without permission and at high prices, following information received through a hotline set up to share details of parties conducting foreign currency transactions in violation of regulations in the Maldives.
Police identified the arrested men as Amir Hussain, MD Meezanur Rahman and Siraz Khan. They were arrested yesterday, police said.
Police said further steps regarding the suspects will be decided based on additional information and findings as the investigation proceeds.
Police also asked anyone with information about parties conducting foreign currency trading outside business rules and without a money exchange business licence issued by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) to message the taskforce's operations number, 9388733. The taskforce was set up to investigate such cases. Information can be shared via SMS as well as messaging applications such as Viber and WhatsApp, police noted.
Police thanked the public for the support received in such matters. Maldives Immigration and police have been carrying out various joint efforts to address issues involving foreigners living in the Maldives in violation of regulations.
