Three More Test Positive for Measles in the Maldives After Week-Long Lull, HPA Reports 290 Cases This Year
Health ·
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported three new cases of measles in the Maldives, ending a brief period where no new infections were recorded for a week. The development brings the total number of measles cases in the country for this year to 290.
According to the HPA, no cases of measles had been contracted in the week leading up to Tuesday of last week. However, figures released today confirm that the disease was transmitted to three additional individuals during that same period.
The HPA continues its vaccination campaign, with 17,256 people having received the measles vaccine so far this year. The disease, which had been eradicated in the Maldives, began spreading again in May last year. While case numbers were initially high, the rate of new infections has now significantly decreased.
The HPA has urged individuals whose vaccination status for two doses of the measles vaccine is not confirmed to visit designated centers to complete their immunization. Health experts advise seeking immediate medical treatment if red spots begin to appear on the body accompanied by fever, emphasizing that attention to symptoms is a key step in halting further spread of the highly contagious disease.
