The Maldivian government has awarded contracts worth over $3.3 million to three state-owned companies to construct and expand health facilities across five islands. The projects, aimed at strengthening primary healthcare infrastructure, were granted to the Road Development Corporation (RDC), Fenaka Corporation Limited, and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). RDC will undertake the expansion of the Hoadedhoo Health Centre in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The $525,292 project includes building a nurse station, a four-bed ward, private and procedure rooms, a laboratory, and a public health unit, alongside supporting facilities like a meeting hall and laundry. The contract stipulates a 365-day completion period. Fenaka Corporation secured two contracts. The first, valued at $330,740, is for expanding the Maakurathu Health Centre in Raa Atoll within 300 days. It will add basic clinical infrastructure, including a four-bed ward and laboratory. The second project, at Vaadhoo Health Centre, is priced at $369,650 and includes similar clinical spaces plus a storeroom, laundry, and garage, with a 365-day timeline. MTCC was awarded the two largest projects by value. The company is tasked with completing the remaining work on the new Kandoodhoo Health Centre building, a $1.41 million project with a 390-day deadline. Additionally, MTCC will expand the Himmafushi Health Centre for $726,330 over 360 days. This project introduces larger-scale facilities, including multiple wards, private rooms, an X-ray room, and expanded storage and laundry services beyond the standard clinical upgrades. The collective initiative represents a significant investment in decentralizing and upgrading healthcare access for island communities, addressing gaps in medical infrastructure outside the Greater Malé region.
