Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has emphasized that the strategic diversification of the Maldives' tourism industry is creating direct economic opportunities for a broader segment of the local population. Speaking at the World Travel Awards 2026, the Minister highlighted how moving beyond traditional models is allowing more citizens to benefit from the nation's primary economic driver.
Reflecting on the industry's 54-year evolution, Minister Ameen credited the determination of early pioneers for establishing the Maldives as a global success story. He noted that the sector's growth has transitioned from a niche luxury market into a globally recognized powerhouse, providing a foundation for the current phase of expansion.
Under the vision of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the government is currently implementing policies to diversify the tourism product and expand travel reach to new international destinations. These efforts aim to decentralize the benefits of tourism, ensuring that opportunities are accessible to various segments of society rather than being concentrated within a few established hubs.
Minister Ameen described the upcoming year as a pivotal milestone as the industry approaches its 55th anniversary. To mark the occasion, Visit Maldives plans to launch extensive celebrations throughout the year, showcasing the country's achievements and reinforcing its competitive edge in the global market.
The Maldives recently hosted the World Travel Awards Asia, Oceania, and Indian Ocean Gala 2026, where it secured five prestigious accolades. Most notably, the nation earned the title of Indian Ocean's Leading Destination for the seventh consecutive year, cementing its status as a premier global travel hub.
The World Travel Awards is widely regarded as the most prestigious honor in the global tourism industry, reflecting the high standards of hospitality and destination management maintained by the Maldives.
