Transport Office and Police Partner to Tackle Greater Male' Traffic Congestion
World ·
The Greater Male' Transport and Mobility Office and the Maldives Police Service have entered talks to establish sustainable solutions for the chronic traffic congestion plaguing the capital region. The collaboration aims to enhance road safety and security while addressing the growing pressure on the region's infrastructure.
Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Male' Transport and Mobility Office, Yoosuf Maaniu, met with Police Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed at the Police Headquarters in the Shaheedh Hussain Adam Building. The discussions centered on immediate measures to alleviate traffic jams and the necessity of closer coordination between the two agencies to ensure public safety on the roads.
Established in July by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the Greater Male' Transport and Mobility Office was created as a direct response to the surge in vehicle ownership and the resulting gridlock in the Male' area. The office is tasked with developing swift, data-driven programs to manage the flow of traffic and advise the government on long-term policy changes required to solve the congestion crisis.
Beyond immediate traffic management, the office is mandated to lead the modernization of the capital's transport system. This includes the identification and development of new parking facilities and the implementation of modern urban mobility solutions to reduce the number of stationary vehicles obstructing narrow streets.
Operating under a governing board, the agency works across various government sectors to integrate transport planning with enforcement. By aligning the Transport Office's strategic planning with the Maldives Police Service's operational capabilities, the government hopes to create a more fluid and secure transit environment for residents and visitors alike.
