Two people have been arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives by swallowing them, the Maldives Customs Service has said. Customs officers became suspicious of the behaviour of two Nepali passengers who arrived in the Maldives from Thailand on September 25, 2026. The passengers were questioned and subjected to a further search, during which the drugs were found. The seizure included 51.6 grams of morphine, 424 grams of cocaine and 708.2 grams of heroin, along with 142 bullets weighing 1,183.8 grams, according to Customs. Customs said it has been intensifying efforts to intercept narcotics being brought into the Maldives by air, including drugs concealed in the body and those smuggled by other means, and that the number of such interceptions has increased.
