Search and rescue teams have recovered the bodies of two Italian divers who disappeared during a diving excursion in Vaavu Atoll. The recovery follows an intensive multi-agency operation to locate a group of missing tourists.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) confirmed that all four missing individuals were located yesterday. The operation was a coordinated effort involving the MNDF Coast Guard, Maldives Police Service, and a team of foreign expert divers commissioned by the Italian government.
According to the MNDF, the bodies were discovered inside the cave where the group had been diving. The challenging nature of the recovery required the expertise of three specialized Finnish divers. These specialists, brought in specifically for this mission, have extensive international experience in complex underwater recovery operations across various global terrains.
The emergency began on Thursday afternoon when the MNDF Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) received reports at approximately 13:45 that five Italian divers had gone missing. In response, the MNDF immediately launched a large-scale search operation, deploying both maritime vessels and aircraft to scan the waters of Vaavu Atoll.
While the recovery of the two bodies marks a somber conclusion to the search, the operation highlights the critical collaboration between Maldivian security forces and international experts in managing high-risk maritime emergencies. Local authorities continue to manage the aftermath of the incident as the families of the deceased are notified.
