Local News ·
Customs officials have arrested two Nepali nationals for attempting to smuggle more than a kilogram of drugs into the Maldives. The two individuals – a 40-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man – were taken into custody on the 25th of last month. According to Customs, a total of 142 bullets containing drugs were found concealed inside their bodies. The drugs comprised 51.6 grammes of morphine, 424 grammes of cocaine and 708.2 grammes of heroin, bringing the total weight to 1,183.8 grammes, or over one kilogramme. The disclosure was made more than three weeks after the incident. The total quantity of drugs falls within the range that would attract the death penalty under recent amendments to the Drug Act. While the official authorities have not revealed the identities of the two individuals, they are known to be a Nepali woman and a Nepali man. Earlier this year, in July, a Jamaican national and a Maldivian were also arrested in a similar case. Last month, Indian passengers were caught at Gan International Airport attempting to smuggle 5.5 kilogrammes of cannabis.
