UK Police Hunt Suspects After High-Value British Empire Artefacts Stolen from Museum

International ·
More than 600 artefacts documenting the links between Britain and countries in the former British Empire were stolen from a UK museum in September, according to police. Avon and Somerset police have launched an appeal for information about four men captured on CCTV outside a building in Bristol on September 25. The stolen items, part of the British Empire and Commonwealth Collection, carry significant cultural value and provide insight into British history. Police described the theft as a 'significant loss for the city.' The burglary occurred between 1:00am and 2:00am in the Cumberland Road area. The collection includes diverse objects from the Pacific islands, African clothing, photographs, films, and sound recordings. It was transferred to Bristol Museums after the closure of the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum in 2012. This incident follows a series of high-profile thefts, including the Louvre's crown jewels in October and the British Museum's loss of 1,800 items in 2023.
