UK Recognises MNU Medical Degree Opening Direct Pathways to NHS Careers

World ·
The United Kingdom's General Medical Council (GMC) has officially recognised the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme at the Maldives National University (MNU), marking the first time a foreign nation has granted official recognition to a Maldivian medical degree. This milestone allows MNU graduates to bypass lengthy individual assessments and apply directly for the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) examination. Successful completion of the PLAB and other licensing requirements will enable Maldivian doctors to practice medicine within the UK's National Health Service (NHS). To achieve this accreditation, the MNU School of Medicine overhauled its academic standards and adopted a modified version of the curriculum used by the National University of Malaysia. Following a comprehensive review, the GMC confirmed that the current curriculum satisfies the stringent requirements necessary for medical licensing in the United Kingdom. Sheeza Ali, Dean of the School of Medicine, stated that the pursuit of UK recognition was driven by the aspirations of recent graduates. While the school's relatively recent establishment initially delayed the process, a growing number of doctors expressed a desire to gain clinical experience within the British healthcare system. Before this decision, graduates faced an uncertain and time-consuming process of individual verification by the GMC. The new recognition removes these hurdles, providing a streamlined route for medical professionals to expand their careers internationally. Established in 2019, the School of Medicine has produced four graduating cohorts to date. The programme's inclusion in the World Directory of Medical Schools further bolsters its global credibility and ensures that Maldivian medical education is aligned with international benchmarks.
