UK Suspends Tariffs on Maldivian Tuna to Support Sustainable Fisheries Sector
Politics ·
The United Kingdom has officially suspended tariffs on Maldivian tuna, a move hailed as a significant endorsement of the Maldives' commitment to sustainable fishing practices. The decision, which takes effect immediately, is expected to provide a substantial economic boost to the nation's fisheries sector.
Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam described the development as a landmark achievement. Speaking via a post on X, the Minister emphasized that the tariff removal serves as clear recognition of the strength and sustainability of the Maldivian fisheries industry on a global stage.
According to Minister Shiyam, the decision will directly benefit a wide range of stakeholders, including local fishermen, their families, fish processors, and the broader island communities that rely on the ocean for their livelihoods. He specifically highlighted the importance of this measure for those practicing 'one-by-one' fishing, a method regarded as the industry's gold standard for environmental sustainability.
"Maldivian tuna feeds the world sustainably and responsibly," Shiyam stated, underscoring the country's role in providing high-quality seafood while preserving marine ecosystems.
The Minister also expressed his gratitude to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, attributing the progress to the administration's leadership and its strategic dedication to elevating the Maldives' fishing industry internationally.
By removing these trade barriers, the UK allows Maldivian tuna to enter its market more competitively. This move not only strengthens bilateral trade ties between the two nations but also incentivizes the continued use of sustainable fishing techniques that protect the fragile biodiversity of the Maldivian waters.
