UK Tariff Suspension to Boost Maldivian Tuna Exports and Fishermen's Income
Politics ·
The United Kingdom has suspended tariffs on Maldivian fish exports, a move President Dr Mohamed Muizzu says will unlock significant opportunities for sustainably caught tuna in the British market.
In a statement shared on X, President Muizzu welcomed the decision, noting that the removal of these trade barriers will make Maldivian tuna more accessible to UK consumers. He emphasized that the shift is expected to drive growth within the domestic fisheries sector, directly increasing the incomes of local fishermen and improving living standards across island communities.
This achievement is the culmination of more than 12 years of diplomatic and economic effort, with successive Maldivian administrations working to secure the suspension. The move recognizes the Maldives' global reputation for responsible, pole-and-line tuna fishing—a method widely praised for its minimal environmental impact and sustainability.
President Muizzu described the development as a historic milestone that underscores the strong bilateral ties between the Maldives and the United Kingdom. He noted that the agreement reflects a mutual commitment to sustainable trade and long-term economic development.
By reducing the cost of entry into one of the world's most influential markets, the Maldives aims to diversify its export destinations and strengthen its economic resilience. The President expressed his gratitude to the UK Government and all contributing partners, framing the tariff suspension as a significant boost to the national economy.
