UK Tourist Arrivals Surpass 80,000 as Maldives' Third Largest Source Market

Tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom have surpassed 80,000 this year, cementing the UK's position as the third-largest source market for the Maldives. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, 80,580 British travelers visited the archipelago by June 2.
While the UK holds a strong position, China and Russia continue to dominate the tourism landscape. China leads as the primary source market with 144,931 arrivals, followed by Russia with 126,712 visitors. Together, these three nations form the core of the Maldives' international visitor base for the year to date.
Overall, the Maldives has welcomed a cumulative total of 951,222 tourists so far this year. This figure represents a 4.1 percent decline compared to the 992,225 arrivals recorded during the same period last year. Tourism officials attribute this slight downturn to geopolitical instability and conflict in the West Asia region, which impacted global travel confidence.
Despite the annual decline, recent trends suggest a recovery is underway. May alone saw more than 139,000 arrivals, marking a 3 percent increase over May of the previous year, signaling a return to growth as the season progresses.
Visitor preferences remain diverse across the country's accommodation sectors. Over 600,000 tourists opted for the luxury of private resorts, while more than 200,000 chose guesthouses, and 22,659 stayed in hotels. To meet this demand, the Maldives currently operates 1,284 tourism facilities, providing a combined capacity of over 67,000 beds.
