Uligam to Become Northern Yacht Hub with New Specialized Marina Project

Uligam in Haa Alif Atoll is set to become a strategic hub for recreational and commercial yachts following the development of a new specialized marina. Minister of Economic Development, Transport, and Trade Mohamed Saeed announced that the facility will transform the northern region into a key destination for international maritime travelers. Due to its location at the northernmost point of the Maldives and proximity to international shipping routes, Uligam has long been a preferred entry point for yachts arriving from abroad. While the island attracts significant tourist traffic during peak seasons, the lack of dedicated docking and service facilities has historically limited its economic potential. The government now aims to bridge this gap to maximize local economic benefits. To facilitate the project, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has signed a land agreement with the Uligam Island Council. Physical construction is scheduled to begin this month, with SAS Construction Private Limited contracted to execute the works. In its initial phase, the marina will be capable of accommodating 18 yachts simultaneously. The facility is designed to provide essential technical services, and crucially, it will house integrated immigration and customs services to streamline the arrival process for foreign visitors. The technical specifications include a three-meter-wide floating platform installed at sea, specifically designed to accommodate vessels measuring between 12 and 15 meters in length. Minister Saeed emphasized that the new marina will ensure convenient, safe, and efficient port services. By formalizing the infrastructure in Uligam, the Maldives expects to further advance its maritime sector and enhance the luxury tourism experience for high-net-worth travelers entering the archipelago from the north.
