USD 5.24 Million Road Modernization Project Begins in Foakaidhoo, Shaviyani Atoll

The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has officially commenced work to modernize the main road network of Foakaidhoo in Shaviyani Atoll. The project aims to overhaul the island's transportation infrastructure, providing a long-term solution to chronic flooding and improving daily mobility for residents. The initiative follows a visit by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in October last year, during which the project was formally handed over to the RDC following community consultations with local residents. The government is funding the project at a total cost of USD 5.24 million, with a completion timeline set for 730 days. According to the RDC, the first phase of the project is already underway. Survey work required for the construction has begun, and essential materials for setting up the project site have been delivered to the island. To ensure minimal disruption to the community, the RDC stated that construction will be phased based on the findings of ongoing surveys, ensuring that daily life and business activities on the island continue as smoothly as possible. Beyond the road network, the project is part of a broader infrastructure upgrade for Foakaidhoo. The government is simultaneously implementing several other key developments on the island, including the construction of a modern Islamic center and the establishment of a dedicated waste management facility. Once complete, the road modernization is expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for the island's population by eliminating water accumulation on main thoroughfares and facilitating easier travel across the community.
