Utheemu and Vashafaru Gain Access to On-Island Laboratory Services

Politics ·
Residents of Utheemu and Vashafaru in Haa Alifu Atoll now have access to essential laboratory services directly on their islands. Health Minister Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim inaugurated the facilities in separate ceremonies. This initiative is part of a broader government plan to establish laboratory services in 76 islands currently lacking them by the end of the year. Utheemu and Vashafaru are the 15th and 16th islands to receive these services, which are considered a fundamental component of primary healthcare. The new on-island labs are expected to facilitate the early detection of diseases and support national efforts to build a healthier population. For Utheemu, this marks a significant improvement. The island's four-bed health centre operates 16 hours a day, but until now, residents faced the logistical challenge of sending samples to Dhidhdhoo Hospital or traveling for tests. Following the inauguration in Vashafaru, Minister Ibrahim met with the senior management of the island's health centre to discuss operational concerns and explore solutions. The government emphasizes that making diagnostic services locally available is a key step in strengthening the healthcare system across the archipelago.
