Vaadhoo Road Project Begins, Government Offers Asphalt or Equipment
Local News ·
Physical work has begun on a major project to modernize the road network on Vaadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The initiative, launched on March 17, will upgrade six roadways with asphalt paving, construct pedestrian sidewalks, and install street lighting systems. The project is being carried out by the Road Development Corporation under a contract signed last September.
The start of construction follows a recent tour of Huvadhu Atoll by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who assured residents his administration would modernize the island's main roads. While highlighting a national push for infrastructure upgrades, state officials clarified that the central government will not force mandatory asphalt paving on local councils.
Several councils, especially those on islands with active tourism, have formally requested to keep their traditional sandy roads. In response, the government has proposed an alternative solution.
Instead of paving, these municipalities will receive specialized vehicles to manage flooding and heavy equipment for essential maintenance. Officials pledged to provide these resources, aiming to resolve infrastructure needs in a way that respects local heritage and strategic visions for island communities.
