Velana Airport must become our regional transit heart
Politics ·
I stood at the Velana terminal yesterday, watching planes come and go, and felt that familiar mix of pride and impatience. We've built this beautiful facility—gleaming floors, spacious gates, all the modern touches. But an empty airport is just a beautiful shell. What matters is the life that flows through it.
We need more than infrastructure. We need planes filled with people connecting through Male', not just arriving for resorts. When I hear about expanding airline partnerships, I think of my cousin who works at the airport—how his job security depends on consistent traffic. I think of the small shops in Malé that could thrive with more transit passengers. This isn't just about aviation; it's about creating ripples through our entire economy.
Our national carrier carries our flag and our hopes. That Jakarta to Jeddah route they're talking about? That's the kind of thinking we need—seeing Male' not as an endpoint but as a crossroads. The Indian Ocean region is opening up, and we're perfectly positioned if we act now. But we can't just wait for others to notice us.
Forward-thinking means more than planning documents. It means our aviation experts sitting at the table with international airlines, understanding what they need, making Male' irresistible as a hub. It means our policies supporting growth rather than hindering it. I've seen too many good ideas in the Maldives get stuck between vision and execution.
The sea has always connected us to the world. Now our airport must do the same. When planes full of transit passengers choose Male', when our national carrier becomes a regional player, that's when we'll feel the real change—more jobs, more opportunities, more reasons for our young people to stay and build here.
We have the location. We have the facility. Now we need the will to make Velana the beating heart of regional travel, pumping economic life through our islands.
