Velana International Airport Launches Calm Room for Passengers with Non-Visible Disabilities
Politics ·
Velana International Airport (VIA) has introduced a dedicated 'Calm Room' at Terminal 1, specifically designed to support passengers traveling with non-visible disabilities. The initiative aims to reduce the stress and sensory overload often associated with busy airport environments, providing a sanctuary for those who require a quiet space to regulate their emotions and comfort.
Inaugurated by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Chief Executive Officer Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, the facility was launched in collaboration with the Maldives Autism Association and Autism Care Maldives. The room is a key component of MACL’s 'BOLI' programme, which draws inspiration from global airport accessibility standards to ensure that the Maldives' primary gateway is inclusive for all travelers.
The Calm Room is equipped with specialized sensory tools and engaging activities designed to alleviate discomfort. To ensure safety and support, the facility allows an accompanying parent or guardian to remain with the passenger. To further streamline the experience, eligible users will be provided with a special identification card and lanyard, enabling airport staff to recognize their needs quickly and provide prioritized assistance.
This development falls under MACL's broader corporate social responsibility framework, emphasizing the need for enhanced accessibility and support services for people with special needs. By integrating these sensory-friendly spaces, MACL seeks to eliminate barriers for neurodivergent passengers and those with hidden disabilities, transforming the travel experience into one that is more compassionate and accessible.
As Velana International Airport continues to expand its infrastructure, the introduction of the Calm Room signals a shift toward holistic passenger care, ensuring that the physical environment caters not only to the general public but also to those with specific sensory requirements.
