Vice President Latheef Joins Berlin Forum to Address Climate-Induced Displacement

World ·
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has departed for Berlin to participate in the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum 2026. As a keynote speaker, the Vice President will engage in high-level discussions focused on the critical issues of sea-level rise and climate-induced displacement, challenges that pose an existential threat to the Maldives. The forum, taking place from June 18 to 19, serves as a global platform bringing together heads of state, senior government officials, youth innovators, and representatives from the world's most vulnerable communities. The gathering aims to accelerate the dialogue on adaptation strategies and address the growing complexities of climate-related human mobility. A central objective of this year's summit is the formal adoption of the Global Climate Mobility Principles. This high-level agreement is designed to establish a framework for adaptation pathways, prioritizing measures that allow residents to remain in their ancestral communities. For those forced to move, the principles seek to ensure that relocation is managed with dignity and the protection of fundamental human rights. Beyond the policy frameworks, the forum will facilitate the creation of a concrete roadmap. Participating governments and international stakeholders intend to translate shared commitments into practical partnerships and coordinated global action, moving from theoretical agreement to tangible implementation. During his visit, Vice President Latheef is scheduled to deliver an opening statement at the High-Level Segment on the Climate Mobility Principles. He will also join a panel of experts to discuss the legal and social protections required for populations facing the encroachment of rising seas.
