The Maldivian government will increase investment in the dental sector to enhance service quality and expand access to specialized oral healthcare across the archipelago, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef announced.
Speaking at the Golden Jubilee ceremony of government dental services at Hotel Jen, the Vice President reaffirmed the administration's commitment to strengthening the nation's oral health infrastructure. A central pillar of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's priority is the decentralization of specialized dental services, ensuring that residents in distant atolls no longer have to travel to the capital for advanced care.
Vice President Latheef highlighted the growth of the local professional workforce, noting that Maldivian dental specialists are now integrated into the public health system across various specialized fields. This shift marks a significant milestone in reducing reliance on foreign expertise and building a sustainable domestic healthcare capacity.
Urging dental professionals to move toward a new era of innovation, the Vice President called for the adoption of the latest technological advances to modernize service delivery. He emphasized that the Golden Jubilee should serve as a catalyst for integrating digital and modern tools into daily practice.
During the event, the Vice President paid tribute to the pioneers of Maldivian dentistry, offering special recognition to Ali Saleem. He described Saleem's five decades of dedicated service as an exemplary model of public service and a lasting legacy for the health sector.
To mark the occasion, the Vice President launched a commemorative publication detailing the history of the Government Dental Department. He also presented awards to the individuals who played pivotal roles in the inception and growth of dental services in the Maldives.
Concluding his address, the Vice President expressed confidence that the Maldives is on a trajectory to become a regional benchmark for excellence in oral healthcare, provided the current momentum of investment and decentralization continues.
