Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has called on the public to strictly adhere to road traffic regulations, warning that reckless driving leads to life-altering consequences for both motorists and pedestrians.
In a statement shared via social media, the Vice President emphasized that road safety is not merely a legal obligation but a personal responsibility. He stressed that prioritizing cautious driving is one of the most significant actions an individual can take to protect the wellbeing of fellow citizens.
The appeal comes amid concerning safety data released by the Maldives Police Service. Official statistics reveal that 1,064 road accidents were reported across the country by the end of April this year, highlighting a persistent challenge in maintaining road safety standards.
Vice President Latheef urged all road users to act with responsibility and empathy, reminding the public that dangerous driving behaviors often result in tragedies that could have been avoided through simple compliance with traffic laws.
By framing road safety as a collective duty, the Vice President aims to shift public perception toward a more mindful approach to commuting, urging a nationwide commitment to reducing the number of accidents on Maldivian roads.
