Vice President Urges Strong Parliament to Prioritize People and Government Accountability

Politics ·
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has asserted that a robust parliament must prioritize the interests of the citizenry and maintain strict government accountability to ensure democratic stability. The Vice President made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Small Branches Workshop, marking the first time the Maldives has hosted the event. Addressing the gathering, Vice President Latheef emphasized that parliamentary strength is not inherent but earned through sustained efforts to uphold democratic principles. He warned that legislatures must operate independently and pursue transparent goals, noting that a failure to maintain this independence could lead to a significant loss of public trust. The Vice President further highlighted the Maldives' strategic relationship with the CPA and its member states, reaffirming the nation's commitment to strengthening its democratic institutions. He described the workshop as a critical platform for enhancing parliamentary capacity and supporting the objectives of accountable governance. Speaker of the Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, also addressed the participants, acknowledging the CPA's consistent support for the Maldivian Parliament. Speaker Abdulla expressed confidence that the workshop would deepen international cooperation and highlighted several local initiatives designed to increase public participation. These include the implementation of an e-petition system and the launch of practice parliament programmes aimed at improving legislative efficiency. Adding to the discussion, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim noted the unique democratic challenges faced by small states, which often operate with limited resources. He emphasized that collaboration with international partners is essential for overcoming these hurdles and building more accountable legislative bodies. The three-day workshop in Malé has brought together Speakers, Deputy Speakers, and senior officials from various CPA member countries to share best practices and strategies for strengthening small-state parliaments.
