Vice President Warns Ethical Breaches in Journalism Risk Spreading Social Unrest
Politics ·
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has warned that the abandonment of ethical standards in journalism creates a dangerous vacuum, paving the way for misinformation that can trigger societal unrest.
Speaking on the critical intersection of press freedom and professional responsibility, the Vice President emphasized that the public depends on journalists as the primary gatekeepers of accurate information. He noted that when this trust is compromised, the resulting confusion obstructs the public's right to truthful information and undermines the stability of the community.
In a social media post addressing the role of the media in a democratic society, Latheef asserted that ethical journalism is a cornerstone of governance. He stated that the practice must prioritize quality information, promote systemic accountability, and ensure transparency to effectively uphold democratic principles.
Beyond the theoretical importance of press freedom, the Vice President highlighted the tangible risks associated with journalistic lapses. He argued that when news dissemination strays from established ethical guidelines, it does not merely result in errors but can actively foster misinformation, leading to widespread public confusion.
Concluding his remarks, the Vice President called upon all media practitioners to exercise greater responsibility in their reporting. He urged journalists to return to and strictly adhere to the fundamental principles and professional standards of the craft to ensure the Maldivian public remains well-informed and the social fabric remains intact.
