Vilunveshi Grant Opens to Boost Food Security and Sustainable Innovation in Maldives

Applications are now open for the Vilunveshi Grant, a financial assistance initiative designed to strengthen food security and foster environmentally sustainable innovations across the Maldives. The programme offers funding of up to USD 6,485 for projects that provide tangible community benefits through sustainable implementation. Targeting both individual entrepreneurs and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the grant focuses on supporting digital solutions and creative ideas that generate income while protecting the environment. The initiative is being jointly implemented by SME Digital and the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources. At its core, the grant aims to reduce environmental harm and increase local food production. This focus aligns with the government's broader strategy to safeguard the Maldives' fragile ecosystem while ensuring a more resilient food supply chain for the archipelago. To be eligible, submitted projects must demonstrate a clear commitment to environmental protection and offer long-term advantages to the local community. Interested applicants are required to submit their proposals via the SME Portal, ensuring all submissions adhere to the established programme guidelines. The Vilunveshi Grant was officially launched on June 23 by the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy. The programme is part of a wider effort by the administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to integrate individuals and small businesses more deeply into the nation's economic and social development. By lowering the financial barrier for sustainable startups, the government intends to diversify the economy and empower local citizens to lead the transition toward a greener, more food-secure future.
