Vilunveshi Grant Programme Launches to Boost Climate Resilience and Food Security

World ·
The Maldivian government has launched the 'Vilunveshi Grant Programme,' a national initiative designed to strengthen climate resilience and create sustainable economic opportunities across the archipelago. Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Ali Shareef, officially inaugurated the programme on 23 June. Supported by the Asian Development Bank, the initiative is a core component of the Enhancing Climate Resilience and Food Security Project. The programme, managed in partnership with SME Digital, provides financial support across three distinct tiers: small grants for individuals, broader assistance for communities and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), and specialized funding for institutional model projects. Funding is specifically targeted toward climate-adaptive agriculture, baseline food security, and digital or environmental innovations. By focusing on these areas, the government aims to increase agricultural productivity and introduce modern commercialization methods for local products. Officials stated that the primary objective is to remove financial barriers for innovators, fostering citizen autonomy and ensuring long-term sustainable development in the face of climate change. The first phase of the rollout is exclusively dedicated to individual small grants. According to SME Digital, applications will open on 23 July via the SME portal on their official website. Due to the competitive nature of the first round, the portal will accept only 150 proposals, from which 50 recipients will be selected following a rigorous evaluation process. The application window for this initial phase will close either on 23 August or once the 150-submission threshold is reached. Looking toward the future, SME Digital noted that the programme intends to distribute grants to 300 distinct parties across its various implementation phases, providing a significant boost to local entrepreneurs and farmers adapting to a changing environment.
