Visit Maldives Strategizes Global Expansion of Halal Tourism at Arabian Travel Market
World ·
The Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) is pursuing a strategic expansion of the country's halal tourism offerings to attract a wider global demographic of Muslim travelers. The announcement comes during high-level discussions at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM), the Middle East's largest travel trade event.
Speaking with PSM News on the sidelines of the fair, VMC Managing Director Abdulla Yasir identified the Islamic tourism sector as a key priority for the archipelago. Halal tourism focuses on providing guaranteed privacy, strictly halal food and beverages, and services that align with Islamic principles, addressing a surging global demand for faith-based travel.
During business-to-business meetings at the ATM, VMC focused on gauging market demand and mapping the infrastructure necessary to scale these specialized services. While the push is heavily driven by the massive Muslim population in the Middle East, Yasir emphasized that the target market extends far beyond the region.
According to Yasir, significant opportunities exist in India and Indonesia, as well as among growing populations in Western nations who embrace a halal lifestyle. This shift transforms halal tourism from a regional niche into a global market opportunity for the Maldives.
"The interest in halal tourism is already there," Yasir stated. "Our halal tourism offering is an avenue that can be opened up to the entire world... Therefore, a wide range of parties are showing immense interest."
By leveraging the ATM platform to forge new partnerships with global stakeholders, VMC aims to implement halal-friendly initiatives that drive inclusive growth. The corporation believes that diversifying its offerings to meet these specific cultural and religious needs will ensure the Maldivian tourism economy remains competitive and accessible to a broader range of international visitors in the coming years.
